Mercury from illegal gold mining spreads through Yanomami rivers, soil, and bodies, while the ground already carries the tremors of the machines causing this harm. This work reappropriates seismic sensing to detect those subsonic vibrations, using open-source data and machine learning to turn them into sound. The signals animate soil-filled containers that release golden dust—traces of extraction transformed into resistance. As the dust settles on surfaces and visitors’ shoes, a decolonized geological perception emerges: one that listens to the ground and senses what lies beyond visibility.

Nominee - Gijs Bakker Award    
traces how geological measurement made the earth extractable: turning ground into data, data into resource, and resource into extraction. Extraction that leaves violence as its surplus: residual, ongoing, atmospheric. Shaped by colonial epistemologies, this mode of sensing enabled dispossession, embedding harm into weather itself. Through the cases of gas extraction in Groningen and gold mining in Yanomami territory, counter-sensing seismology emerges as a method to invert this logic, repurposing seismic tools to register harm too slow to see and too deep to ignore. A practice of resistance, accountability, and attunement.

BETWEEN INDEPENDENCY AND DEATH Explores how Brazil’s national myths are revived to serve right-wing power. Centered on Dom Pedro I — the Portuguese prince who declared Brazil’s “independence” — the film reveals how his ghost returns whenever authority seeks legitimacy. His embalmed body’s 1972 journey from Portugal to Brazil becomes a metaphor for colonial continuity: even the dead are used to rule the living. Between independence and death, the nation remains trapped in a fevered loop of memory and control.

A live event that simulated networked, panoptic spaces by imposing a set of rules that tested group belonging and internal policing. Mediated through smartphones and Instagram Live, it unfolded in two acts: first, 37 performers wandered freely while continuously broadcasting themselves; then the audience was invited in—on the condition that they also went live. Those who refused were immediately surrounded and filmed, revealing how digital publics blur the boundaries between participation and submission, consent and control, and how authority quietly governs who is allowed to belong.

(“May’s Scaffolding”) is an experiment–festival that tests how community-building around culture can revive abandoned first-generation shopping centers. In Viana do Castelo, Portugal, the former 1º de Maio Shopping Centre has gradually fallen into oblivion. Andaime de Maio reopens the building to collective use through an artistic residency and a continuous programme of cultural activities — performances, concerts, conversations, exhibitions, workshops, and cinema — allowing the mall to operate once again as a living part of the city.    






Gil Monteverder (they/them) is interested in decolonial and politically engaged practices, that explores how technologies, data, and design communicate and intervene in social and environmental realities. Their MA project, Vibrational Witnessing: Towards a Counter-Sensing Seismology, aims to repurpose seismic infrastructures to detect and testify to extractive violence. Across design and community initiatives, they examine the intersections of territory, technology, and collective memory in radical social transformation.
