(“May’s Scaffolding”) is an experiment–festival that tests how community-building around culture can revive abandoned first-generation shopping centers.
In Viana do Castelo, Portugal, the former 1º de Maio Shopping Centre has gradually fallen into oblivion. Andaime de Maio reopens the building to collective use through an artistic residency and a continuous programme of cultural activities — performances, concerts, conversations, exhibitions, workshops, and cinema — allowing the mall to operate once again as a living part of the city.
